{"id":328,"date":"2015-10-05T15:07:31","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T19:07:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/?p=328"},"modified":"2015-10-05T15:07:31","modified_gmt":"2015-10-05T19:07:31","slug":"building-bluetooth-and-boards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/index.php\/2015\/10\/building-bluetooth-and-boards\/","title":{"rendered":"Building, Bluetooth, and Boards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These week I focused primarily on what I need to start actually building the for-field-use soil moisture\/temperature sensor platform, as well as selecting a bluetooth shield for communicating with our field science app, and picking a board to actually build the platform on.<\/p>\n<p>I tracked down circuit schematics for the Infrared temperature sensor. So far I think it will work for our purposes, and at around ~$3 a unit I see no reason not to try it out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-05-at-2.42.31-PM.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-346\" src=\"https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-05-at-2.42.31-PM-293x300.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 2.42.31 PM\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-05-at-2.42.31-PM-293x300.png 293w, https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-05-at-2.42.31-PM-999x1024.png 999w, https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-05-at-2.42.31-PM-60x60.png 60w, https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-05-at-2.42.31-PM.png 1030w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We already have several moisture (and temp &#8211; a useful calibration for the IR measurements) sensing\u00a0platforms\u00a0laying around so I will probably cannibalize one of those for it&#8217;s sensor. I just need to figure out which one&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-05-at-2.43.00-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-347\" src=\"https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-05-at-2.43.00-PM-286x300.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 2.43.00 PM\" width=\"286\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-05-at-2.43.00-PM-286x300.png 286w, https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-05-at-2.43.00-PM.png 846w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My next order of business is selecting the best bluetooth shield for this project. I&#8217;m looking at Bluetooth LE (low energy) because we don&#8217;t want it to die in the field. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adafruit.com\/product\/2732\">The LightBlue Bean<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/fieldscience.cs.earlham.edu\/index.php\/2015\/10\/03\/lightblue-bean-for-ambiance\/\">Kristin found<\/a> for the Ambiance platform looks promising &#8211; it has extra functionality built in that might not be necessary for bench-top applications but could be useful out in the field. Even though the ambiance platform will have a LightBlue Bean sending back temperature and accelerometer data, it might be nice to have this data associated with a sensor value on the ground as well. Also the onboard battery is very nice. I&#8217;ve been looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1_ev0B5GA7ykpC0VFP15ZdfwiQ7DgshniMpYDlxNLeAw\/edit?usp=sharing\">other shields<\/a> but I think I need a second set of more knowledgeable eyes to discern which ones might work best for bench applications.<\/p>\n<p>Up until now we have primarily used the Arduino Yun for field sensors because of it&#8217;s\u00a0wifi capabilities, which are handy for in-field debugging. Now that we are moving towards bluetooth, this is no longer necessary. I was thinking about using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arduino.cc\/en\/Main\/ArduinoBoardUno\">Arduino UNO<\/a>. This seems to be the flagship board from Arduino, and is advertised as being the best for beginners (which I am).
